Deadlines Extended Due to COVID-19

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, with the approval of Governor Ned Lamont, has extended deadlines for Connecticut residents with expiring credentials.  

Check your driver’s license or non-driver ID.  If your expiration date is approaching, renew now to avoid paying a $25 late fee.

Driver’s Licenses, Disability Placards, Learner’s Permits and Identity Cards

Deadlines have been extended for the following items:

  • Driver’s licenses (does not apply to CDL – see below)
  • Learner’s permits (does not apply to Commercial Learner Permits – see below)
  • Identity cards
  • Permanent Disability Placards
If the item expired or will expire:IT REMAINS VALID:
From MARCH 1, 2020 to DECEMBER 31, 2020For ONE (1) YEAR after the expiration date printed on the credential.
From JANUARY 1, 2021 to MARCH 31, 2021Through DECEMBER 31, 2021

New Residents

  • New Residents – For any person who moved to Connecticut after March 10, 2020, the deadline for obtaining a license, registration or emissions inspection in Connecticut will be extended by 180 days. 

Commercial Driver’s Licenses

Deadlines have also been extended for the following item:

  • Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL)
If the item expired or will expire:IT REMAINS VALID:
From MARCH 1, 2020 to DECEMBER 31, 2020For ONE (1) YEAR after the expiration date printed on the credential.

Commercial Learner’s Permits

Deadlines have also been extended for the following item:

  • Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLP)
If the item expired or will expire:IT REMAINS VALID:
From MARCH 1, 2020 to DECEMBER 31, 2020Until FEBRUARY 28, 2021

Vehicle and Boat Registrations and Emissions Tests 

Deadlines have also been extended for the following items:

  • Motor vehicle and boat registrations
  • Emissions tests or retests
If the item expired or will expire:IT REMAINS VALID: 
 From MARCH 10, 2020 to MAY 31, 2020Until NOVEMBER 30, 2020
  
 From JUNE 1, 2020 to NOVEMBER 30, 2020Until DECEMBER 31, 2020

In addition to extending the expiration date of DMV credentials, late fees associated with eligible expired credentials will be waived during the time period of the extension for qualifying credentials.
